Hickman's art has been described as representational
landscapes and architectural landscapes. Using soft pastels on a black
surface to draw out the vibrancy and intensity of her color palette,
Hickman takes pleasure in looking at ordinary objects in extraordinary
light. "The light in the morning is different from the light in the
afternoon and can shape the way your eye perceives something, even
something as everyday as the corner of a house," Hickman remarked. She
draws inspriration from the Delmarva peninsula, particularly her native
Bethany Beach.
Many of her works depict "gently aging
buildings" along Delaware shores, and she also has been fascinated with
the countryside of Tuscany from her stay in Italy in May, 2001.
